How couples counseling works

Skills you can learn quickly, made for the two of you

A couple smiling and talking over coffee by the window

I teach specific skills and attitudes that have been shown to build relationships. After an assessment, I customize them for your relationship, and they can be learned quickly.

I actively guide our conversations so they stay productive and not hurtful. And either or both of you can start change, even if only one of you is ready today.

Couples counseling can help you find:

  • Less conflict and more calm
  • Healing from anger and affairs
  • Forgiveness, respect, and affection with sexual intimacy

What we work on

What couples bring to counseling

We set your goals together at the initial consultation. These are some of the most common.

  • Communication

Talk about hard things without hurting each other, and feel heard again.

  • Distance & withdrawal

When one or both of you have pulled away and you feel more like strangers than partners.

  • Trust & infidelity

Healing after an affair, internet use or broken promises, with responsibility, not judgment.

  • Affection & intimacy

When affection or sexual interest has faded and talking about it feels hard.

  • Hard seasons

Stay connected through depression, a chronic illness, separation, or a big life change.

  • Marriage enrichment

For engaged couples and couples who want to grow stronger, with Prepare/Enrich.

Can one of us start alone?

Yes. Either or both of you can start change, and your partner can join later.

Is faith part of counseling?

Only if you want it to be. Faith-based counseling is available for Christian couples, and you decide how faith is discussed.

Can couples from outside the Rogue Valley come?

Yes. Couples from other Oregon cities often choose an intensive: closely spaced sessions, up to 20 hours, focused on one issue. Online sessions are also available anywhere in Oregon.
